5 Tips For Caring For Your Teeth And Gums
Teeth Cleaning Tips for Excellent Dental Health
Whether it‘s been six weeks or six years since you had a teeth cleaning, you’re looking for a Bay Area dentist who can support your health, answers your questions, and help you develop a preventative routine to keep your teeth and gums as healthy as possible.
Here are 5 tips to help make teeth cleaning and oral care easier on you and less likely to lead to problems, such as periodontal disease and tooth loss.
1. Brush and floss every day, effectively, using a soft bristled brush.
You’ve heard this advice before, but it never hurts to hear it again. Studies suggest that brushing and flossing together can help to prevent the accumulation of plaque and tartar and keep your teeth looking white. This routine can also protect against long term negative changes to the bacteria in your mouth.
2. Consider adding a swish of mouthwash to your routine.
Mouthwash can kill off bad bacteria, fight plaque and complement the effects of regular brushing and flossing. It also helps in the fight against bad breath.
3. Add in an oil massage (oil pulling).
Some studies suggest that massaging the gums with coconut or sesame oil (or other types of oil) can help reduce bleeding and inflammation and possibly even whiten the teeth. Some oral health professionals also advocate using the Eastern practice of “oil pulling.” This involves swishing oil in the mouth for a few minutes every day. Research on oil pulling has not fully validated (or refuted) these health claims.
4. Eat a diet that protects your teeth from damage.
Processed, refined carbohydrates and added sugars have been well-known to cause dental caries, gum disease and other oral health problems. Make sure that your diet is full of real, whole foods, including meat, healthy fats, vegetables, fruit, nuts, etc. As a good rule of thumb, shop around the perimeter of the grocery store instead of in center isles, which contain more processed and sugar-laden foods.
5. Get regular dental checkups and cleanings.
